FRP piping is a corrosion-resistant composite piping option for industrial service, but it is not one universal material. Its performance depends on the resin, corrosion barrier, structural laminate, joints, supports and the documented operating conditions.

Short answer: FRP piping can be lighter than steel and does not rust. It can provide chemical resistance and reduced maintenance when the complete system is selected and designed for the actual fluid, concentration, temperature, pressure or vacuum, abrasion, loads and installation environment.

What Is FRP Piping?

Fibreglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) piping uses glass-fibre reinforcement in a thermoset resin matrix. In corrosion service, the inner resin-rich corrosion barrier contacts the process fluid, while the structural laminate carries the design loads. Those layers have different functions and must be specified together.

Troy Dualam’s normal reinforcement is glass fibre. Carbon fibre should not be assumed to be part of a standard TDI piping construction.

Qualified Benefits of FRP Piping

  • Resistance to rust: FRP itself does not rust, although metallic hardware in a complete installation may still require corrosion protection.
  • Lower weight: FRP is generally lighter than steel, which can simplify handling. Supports, guides, anchors, thrust restraint and equipment loads must still be designed for FRP.
  • Service-specific chemical resistance: The resin and corrosion-barrier system can be selected against a documented chemical service. No resin or laminate is universally compatible.
  • Custom fabrication: Pipe, fittings, headers, spools and manifolds can be fabricated around project dimensions and connection requirements.
  • Maintenance potential: A correctly selected FRP system may reduce corrosion-related maintenance, but FRP is not immune to wear, permeation, cracking, UV exposure or installation damage.

Where FRP Piping May Be Used

Project-specific applications may include chemical processing, industrial water and wastewater, pulp and paper, mining and mineral processing, air-pollution-control systems and other corrosive industrial services. Suitability is decided from the actual duty—not from the industry name alone.

Solid FRP Versus Dual-Laminate Piping

Solid FRP piping uses a project-selected thermoset resin system for both the corrosion barrier and structural laminate.

Dual-laminate piping combines a thermoplastic corrosion liner, usually fabricated with welded liner joints, with structural FRP backing. It may be selected when a solid-FRP corrosion barrier is not the preferred corrosion system for the defined service.

Candidate liner materials can include PP, PVC-U, CPVC, PVDF, ECTFE, FEP and PFA. Selection must be verified for the exact fluid or mixture, concentration, temperature, pressure and vacuum, permeation risk, solids and abrasion, operating cycle, joint design and fabrication method.

Information Required for FRP Pipe Selection

A technical review should document:

  • the process fluid or mixture, relevant constituents and concentrations, including cleaning and upset conditions;
  • operating and design temperature;
  • normal and design pressure, partial or full vacuum and transient surge;
  • flow rate, velocity, specific gravity, solids and abrasion;
  • nominal size and actual pipe and fitting dimensions;
  • joint, gasket and connection method;
  • supports, guides, anchors, thrust restraint and thermal expansion;
  • operating cycles, installation environment and external loads; and
  • applicable project specifications, codes and testing requirements.

Pressure, Vacuum and Complete-System Ratings

Allowable pressure and vacuum are design-specific and limited by the lowest-rated compatible component or joint in the assembled system. A nominal size, flange bolt pattern or one component’s rating does not establish the capacity of the complete piping system.
