Troy Dualam Inc. fabricates made-to-order FRP and dual-laminate equipment for corrosive industrial service at its Elizabethtown, Ontario shop. Dual-Laminate Equipment

Materials Selected for the Complete Service

Conventional FRP uses a project-selected thermoset resin system, commonly vinyl ester, with a resin-rich corrosion barrier and a separate load-carrying FRP laminate. Dual-laminate construction uses a project-selected thermoplastic liner backed by structural FRP.

Material suitability is evaluated against the complete fluid or mixture, concentration, temperature, contaminants, solids, operating cycle, and upset or cleaning conditions. Candidate thermoplastic liner families can include PVC-U, CPVC, PP, PVDF, ECTFE, FEP and PFA, subject to compatibility with the complete service.

What to Provide for Project Review

To define the fabrication scope, provide the available project information:

  • Equipment type, quantity and intended function
  • Complete fluid or mixture, concentration range, contaminants, solids and cleaning chemicals
  • Normal, design and upset temperatures; density or specific gravity; operating level and capacity
  • Internal pressure, external pressure or vacuum requirements
  • Dimensions, orientation, drawings, nozzles, flanges, spool isometrics and tie-in points
  • Agitation, internals, connected-equipment loads, supports and foundation details
  • Wind, seismic, snow, environmental exposure, shipping limits and site access
  • Applicable code, project specification, certification requirements and owner standards
  • Required inspections, testing, quality records and turnover documentation
  • Any separately defined field-assembly or installation scope

Fabrication Methods & Project-Specific Quality

Fabrication methods selected for the design

TDI provides project-defined engineering support and shop fabrication. The fabrication method is selected for the approved design and geometry. Methods can include hand lay-up (contact moulding), filament winding for suitable cylindrical components, thermoplastic forming and welding for dual-laminate liners, secondary bonding, fitting and spool fabrication, controlled curing and shop assembly.

Project-specific quality and inspection

Fabrication is performed under controlled procedures. Quality controls are established for the applicable equipment, design basis and project quality plan. Depending on the scope, they may include material traceability, resin mixing and cure records, visual and dimensional inspection, laminate-thickness checks, Barcol hardness or acetone-sensitivity checks, thermoplastic-weld inspection, holiday or spark testing, and leak or hydrostatic testing.

Inspection, testing, documentation and acceptance requirements are confirmed for each project rather than represented as universal tests.

ASME RTP scope

Troy Dualam Inc. holds an active ASME RTP Certificate of Authorization for shop fabrication within its stated scope: reinforced thermoset plastic corrosion-resistant vessels fabricated using hand lay-up and filament winding, including vessels with fabric- and chemically bonded thermoplastic linings used in dual-laminate construction.

ASME RTP-1 applicability and use of the ASME Certification Mark with RTP Designator are confirmed for each project. The certificate scope does not include piping, ducting, field fabrication, field assembly or field repair. Review Troy Dualam’s Certificate Scope.
